Generation z

debate club

Does your 11, 12, 13 year old like to argue? We are starting a Debate Club this summer to refine these skills!

Gen Z Debate Club is an opportunity for students entering 6th and 7th grade to refine their argumentative styles, build academic vocabulary, and develop critical thinking skills. A focus on being an active, open-minded, and critical listener will also be worked on, since this is an equally important aspect of debate and offering a persuasive argument. Age-appropriate controversial topics will be selected each session, students will research and take a stance, formulate their argument, and attempt to convince the other team through live debate and/or persuasive writing. The environment will be relaxed but lively in order to encourage students who may need support in stepping back to appreciate others’ perspectives as well as students who may need encouragement to speak up in academic contexts.

Bring a snack and tell a friend! This will be a ton of fun with great conversations over current events!

Join CHAT & CHEW, a book club to keep the reading going over summer break! Students will vote on the first day to pick a highly motivating book to read as a group. Book club members will read a chapter together each session and will read one chapter independently in between sessions. A certified speech-language pathologist will introduce, teach, and demonstrate one new comprehension strategy each session. Members will practice these strategies during the session and have an opportunity to practice on their own. At the end of the book club, members will have the opportunity to share their favorite parts with their peers during the Book Club completion party.
